About this deal

If ABBA's "artsiness" was a much later development, then how do you explain 1977's "Eagle," which sounds like a perfect fusion of Giorgio Moroder, Pink Floyd and Station to Station-era Bowie? The 2002 re-release was not released in Australia, while in New Zealand, the international edition was issued. The genius of Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus' music and words is that its music for the every person, but to acknowledge such romantic dreams and failure turns it into an operatic theater piece of sorts.

These were included here as well as some of ABBA's lesser-known hits from the time when their popularity was declining, such as " Head over Heels" and " The Day Before You Came. And does the prospect of "artsy synth-pop ABBA" really prepare you for how dark, claustrophobic and unsettling songs like "The Day Before You Came," "Under Attack" and especially "The Visitors" really are? While Gold: Greatest Hits had showcased 19 of the group's biggest and most recognisable hits, this left out a number of other sizeable international hits, such as " Summer Night City", " I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" and " Angeleyes".

Erasure had released a 4 track ABBA cover EP, Abba-esque, in summer 1992 which topped charts around the world showing there was still a strong interest in ABBA's music.

Writing for Pitchfork in 2019, reviewer Jamieson Cox agreed, describing Gold: Greatest Hits as a "refined package with surprising emotional range".The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products.
