About this deal

Lesley Pearse has long been one of my very favourite authors, she is a true storyteller and this is her at her very very best. The character should have been a lot more damaged for me to sympathize with her, and take her a bit more seriously. Eighteen-year-old Mari is defiant, selfish and has given up everything in favour of glamorous parties in the West End.

Lesley Pearse is one of the UK's best-loved novelists with fans across the globe and sales of over 2 million copies of her books to date. This all changes when she finds herself the only witness to a brutal murder, she is snatched from the street and her 'education' into the dark, violent underworld of prostitution and crime begins.

Volunteering to help battlefield wounded, Belle is posted to France as a Red Cross ambulance driver. This book is set in London in 1912 which was really interesting and it even mentioned the sinking of the Titanic!

However her fate is in dire straits when she is bought by another brothel owner, this time in New Orleans. I have my own hopes for Belle but I know for certain what ever happens to her next I won’t be expecting it. By this time Belle has been transported to Paris where she is sold to one Madame Sondheim’s brothel. With her father in the Royal Marines, Lesley and her older brother spent three years in grim orphanages before her father remarried - a veritable dragon of an ex army nurse - and Lesley and her older brother were brought home again, to be joined by two other children who were later adopted by her father and stepmother, and a continuing stream of foster children. Our Adult Fiction Books, Range includes Classics Novels, Comic Books, Crime, Thriller, Mystery Novels, General Fiction, Horror, Romance, Science Fiction and War. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. In fact her first thought at being a prostitute was that if she was going to do it, she would be the best.

Whether crime as in 'Till We Meet Again', historical adventure like 'Never Look Back', or the passionately emotive 'Trust Me', based on the true-life scandal of British child migrants sent to Australia in the post war period, she engages the reader completely. Pearse fell flat by not leveraging the colorful era/ locales instead you really couldn't tell when or where it was until a character told you. Her father was away at sea and it was only when a neighbour saw Lesley and her brother playing outside without coats on that suspicion was aroused - their mother had been dead for some time. Her annoying naivety and eagerness to divulge her story to anyone she meets seems out of character for someone who has gone through so much at a young age. The impact of constant change and uncertainty in Lesley's early years is reflected in one of the recurring themes in her books: what happens to those who are emotionally damaged as children.
